Urban Axes didn't start as a business plan so much as an obsession. Founder Krista Paton discovered axe throwing while working in Toronto and came back convinced the U.S. needed it too — less "market opportunity," more "America needs this." That instinct turned into the country's first indoor axe-throwing venue, and Somerville's Union Square location, open since 2018, has grown into one of the busiest of the now several Urban Axes outposts across the East Coast.

The setup

The Union Square space is built for groups, not just tolerant of them. Four separate throwing arenas spread across 15 lanes mean a party of 100 can book in without splitting time with strangers, while smaller crews get a private arena to themselves — no shared lanes, no waiting on other groups to finish their turn. Every private booking comes with a dedicated coach whose entire job is running your session: safety briefing, technique tips, and then a custom round-robin tournament that keeps everyone throwing instead of standing around watching. Closed-toe shoes are the one hard rule; past that, showing up in whatever lets you swing your arm overhead is enough.

Between throws, there's a full bar pouring local craft beer, cider, seltzer, and wine — Urban Axes is a fully licensed venue, and outside alcohol isn't allowed, though you're welcome to bring in your own food or arrange catering. It's less "throw axes, then go find a bar" and more "the bar is already here."

Why it works for a group that wants more than a bar crawl

Axe throwing has become a go-to for bachelorette and birthday crews precisely because it splits the difference between "activity" and "hangout." You're not sitting through a class or being herded through a tour — you're drinking, talking trash, and taking turns trying to stick a target, which turns out to be a surprisingly good icebreaker for groups that don't all know each other yet. Reviewers consistently point to how quickly the awkwardness burns off once the tournament bracket goes up and someone's cousin turns out to be unreasonably good at this.

It also helps that Urban Axes treats the sport seriously without taking itself too seriously. As a founding member of the International Axe Throwing Federation, the venue holds itself to safety and coaching standards that go beyond "hand you an axe and hope for the best" — which matters when the crowd includes first-timers wobbling in heels straight from brunch. And for anyone who catches the bug, there's a standing league for people who want to keep competing long after the bachelorette weekend ends.

Getting there

Union Square sits a short ride from downtown Boston and is now considerably easier to reach thanks to the Green Line extension, which put a T stop within walking distance for the first time. It's also close to both MIT and Harvard, making it a natural stop for a group already based in Cambridge or looking to build an evening around Somerville's restaurant and bar scene before or after the session.
