Party planning

all in one place

The planning thread for the team outing has stalled in the usual place. Half the group wants to actually do something, a few people are quietly hoping it involves food and a place to sit, the newest hire hasn't weighed in at all, and whoever volunteered to organize is stuck choosing between another long lunch downtown and a trivia night nobody will remember by Tuesday. Next Round Social, which opened in North Charleston this past August, makes a strong case for a third option: put everyone in one neon-lit building, hand them something to compete at, and let the food come to them.

‍

Built for coworkers, too

‍

Most of the early buzz around Next Round Social has centered on birthdays and bachelorette weekends, and the venue earns that reputation. But it's worth noticing how the place describes itself: a retro-inspired entertainment center built for socializing and competing with friends, family, and coworkers. That last word is doing real work. In its first weeks open, a small corporate group came through, spent their session on axe throwing and arcade games, and left saying the axes were the clear team favorite and that they were already planning a return trip for the mini-golf and duckpin lanes.

‍

That's the right instinct about what makes a team event land. The activity matters less than the fact that people who normally sit in separate meetings end up on the same side of a scoreboard, arguing about whether that throw counted.

‍

Location helps, too. The venue sits in the Dorchester Square Shopping Center at 4391 Dorchester Road, which means teams working out of North Charleston and the surrounding area can skip the downtown parking hunt entirely. The whole space is indoors, so a July heat index or a surprise afternoon storm doesn't send anyone scrambling for a backup plan.

‍

Everything keeps score

‍

What separates Next Round Social from a bar with a few games in the corner is how seriously it takes competition. The arcade is anchored by group-friendly games like Connect Four Basketball and Down the Clown, alongside Jurassic Park and Fast and the Furious cabinets that have been rebuilt with updated scoring. The nine-hole mini-golf course is gamified, with a scoreboard that follows your group from hole to hole, so nobody has to keep a pencil tally or take anyone's word for it.

‍

Duckpin bowling is the quiet equalizer here. The balls are small enough to palm, there are no finger holes, and one reviewer singled out both the smaller balls and the shoes as part of the fun. It's a format almost nobody has played much, which means the colleague who bowls in a Thursday league doesn't automatically run away with it. Axe throwing, meanwhile, tends to produce the stories people retell the following week, usually involving someone who swore they'd be terrible and then stuck three in a row.

‍

Reviewers keep coming back to the same few points: the equipment is brand new, the space is spotless, the murals wrapping the walls set the mood, and the pricing feels fair for what you get. Several also mentioned the staff going out of their way to make groups feel looked after, which matters more than usual when you're the one responsible for making sure thirty coworkers have a good afternoon.

‍

How the packages work for a team

‍

Batch offers two ways to book, both running about two hours, and each includes one activity block for the group. You choose between two duckpin lanes for the full two hours, nine holes of mini-golf plus a 30-minute arcade card per guest, or 30 minutes of axe throwing plus that same arcade card. Extra activities can be added on top if your group wants to try more than one.

‍

The Cocktail Hour + Activities package starts at $500 per party and brings two large pizzas, a loaded nacho platter, and beer and wine tickets. For a bigger spread, the Buffet + Drinks + Activities package starts at $800 for a group of 12, with your choice of a pizza and wings buffet or a taco bar plus 24 beer and wine tickets. Additional guests beyond 12 can be added at $65 each, which makes it easy to scale up when the invite list grows. In both cases, the food comes out while you play rather than as a sit-down meal, which keeps people moving between groups instead of locked into whoever they happened to sit next to.

‍

A few details worth knowing before you submit this for approval. A 50% deposit, paid by credit card through a link the venue emails you, is due at least a week before the event, with the remaining balance settled at the end. A 20% service charge applies to all events, so build that into your budget number up front. You can change your activities or food as many times as needed up to a week out, even after signing and paying, which is a relief when headcount shifts at the last minute. And if axe throwing makes the cut, put "closed-toed shoes required" directly in the calendar invite.

‍

The venue also has three private party rooms, including a VIP room with four private duckpin lanes, so if your group would rather keep things a bit separate from the main floor, ask about it when you book. Weekday hours start at 11 a.m., which opens the door to an afternoon outing instead of asking everyone to give up an evening.

‍

Book on Batch

‍

The best version of this outing ends with a rematch already being negotiated on the way to the parking lot, and someone in Monday's standup insisting the mini-golf scoreboard was rigged.
