Did you know that Charleston was once called the "Gayest City in America"? As a port city with a long history and rich creative culture, Charleston has long been home to a variety of LGBTQ+ figures. While many had to hide their identities in life, there were still community members who were out and proud throughout the city's history. We'll explore the beautiful historic district and share stories of the LGBTQ+ Charlestonians who helped make this city the beloved place it is today. Our goal is to combat the invisibility of this community in the historic landscape, and to provide a more complete historic interpretation of Charleston while honoring the memories of some of the city's most colorful characters.
