Devil Mask Studio Turned a Terrible Idea Into DTLA's Most Unexpected Group Night

Three People Who Knew Better

Andrew, Melissa, and Nora met teaching rope bondage classes across the country. Over the better part of a decade, they built community, developed and redeveloped curriculum, and kept running into the same problem: there was real demand for modern, consent-forward rope education, and nowhere in Los Angeles built to meet it. They also knew, by every practical measure, that opening a dedicated shibari studio was a pretty terrible idea. Then they visited Studio Friction in Denver, and the spreadsheets started flying. After weeks of number crunching and conversations with friends running studios in other cities, Andrew came back to Melissa and Nora with a pitch: what if the worst idea was actually the best one. Three weeks later, the business was incorporated and the lease was signed. Three months after that, in January 2024, the doors opened.

A Sanctuary in the Historic Core

The studio sits in a historic Downtown LA building, and it does not look like what most people picture when they hear "rope bondage studio." A wall of east-facing windows floods the room with natural light, original hardwood floors and tin-tile ceilings give it real character, and the decor leans Mid-Century Modern with Japandi touches, all clean lines and warm wood tones. Lush indoor plants fill in the corners, and Hue bulbs let the space shift into nearly any color wash once the sun goes down. It reads less like a classroom and more like a space someone actually lives in, which is exactly the point. Guests consistently mention how clean, calm, and unexpectedly beautiful the studio feels the moment they walk in, before a single knot gets tied.

Curiosity Over Technique

Between them, Andrew, Melissa, and Nora bring close to forty-five years of combined teaching experience, and it shows in how little the classes feel like drilling technique for its own sake. Their approach is built around helping people discover their own facility with rope rather than handing them a script to follow. Reviewers regularly point to how clearly the instructors explain not just the how but the why behind what they're teaching, and how much care goes into making sure everyone in the room can follow along and feel included. Students leave with actual skills, but more than that, they leave having spent an hour or two getting curious about something new, together.

From Uncertain to "Can We Come Back"

Some guests show up already excited. Others walk in a little unsure what they signed up for. By the end, both groups tend to land in the same place: inspired, a little surprised at themselves, and already asking when they can come back. That arc is what makes a class here work so well for a group. It's a shared experience nobody in the room has done before, it gives everyone something to talk about afterward, and it works whether the goal is a genuinely different bachelorette outing, a way to get a friend group out of their comfort zone together, or just an excuse to try something none of you would try alone.

Devil Mask Studio runs a full introductory class for groups completely new to rope, a follow-up for anyone ready to go past the basics, a live shibari performance for groups who want to watch before they try, and private event bookings for anyone who wants the whole space to themselves.
