What Is Barre?
Barre classes fuse yoga and ballet to create an exercise fit for all shapes, sizes, ages, and genders (yes, men, even YOU!). Developed by Lotte Berk, a German dancer, barre was developed to create a low impact form of activity that uses isometric movements to target specific muscle groups throughout the entire body. Barre is a full-body workout that stabilizes the core, tones the arms, defines the thighs and seat, and strengthens the abs. We integrate quick stretches throughout the class to lengthen the muscles and increase flexibility and range of motion - this also helps prevent muscles from bulking up; we're working for strong, lean bodies! Our goal at Barre South is to strengthen, tone and stretch individual muscles in order to create a strong and confident YOU!
What Should I Expect?
Arrive 15 minutes early to class to check in and fill out new client paperwork - anyone who arrives more than five (5) minutes late will be turned away (we do this for your own safety!). Each barre class is a 60-minute total body workout. Beginning with a warm-up, we will incorporate planks, push-ups, and arm work using free weights to fire up the muscles, increase the heart rate, and strengthen the core and upper body. This is followed by thigh and seat work where we focus on using small isometric movements, at the barre or on the floor, to sculpt the quads, glutes, and hamstrings. Next up, we're working for that six-pack! Our abdominal exercises will help you carve out those washboard abs. The last two sprints of class include back work, and one last burst of seat work before a final stretch and cooling down the muscles and mind. Shake shake shake! Don't be afraid of the quiver. This is your body's reaction to change. If it's shaking, it's working. Let it happen!
Are There Different Levels Of Difficulty?
While we don't offer different class levels, we do offer modifications throughout each class based on participant needs. If you prefer not to be physically adjusted, inform your instructor at the beginning of class. Our verbal and physical cues are used to ensure safe and proper form.

What Should I Wear?
Wear comfortable clothing - yoga pants or leggings (shorts not recommended). No socks necessary but feel free to wear sticky socks for slippery feet!
Do I Need To Bring Anything?
Just yourself! We provide mats and towels. Feel free to bring your own water; we also have FIJI bottles available.
How Often Should I Come To Class?
We recommend coming to at least 3 barre classes per week. Heck, you can come seven days a week if you want! Just be sure to listen to your body and let it rest when needed. Not only will you start seeing results both mentally and physically, but coming several times a week will help you perfect your form which is essential in reaping the benefits of class. That being said, barre classes never get easy! But understanding the movements and targeted muscles does.
Can I Take A Barre Class If I Am Pregnant?
Yes!! With approval from your doctor, expectant mommies are welcome throughout their entire term! Consult with your instructor before class, and she will offer you some modifications.
