You'll paddle out from Wilmington's coastline and land on Masonboro Island, a 8.4-mile undeveloped barrier island that is only reachable by water and sits entirely within a North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve.

• Guided kayak launch: Your certified guide walks you through a quick on-water orientation before the group sets off together across the inlet toward the island.

• Barrier island crossing: You'll paddle roughly a mile of open coastal water with views of the Cape Fear coast opening up around you as you go.
