About this Experience

What you'll do:

You'll paddle the Chicago River after dark with a guide who actually knows this city, catching front-row views of the Navy Pier fireworks from the water before the night is over.

  • Guided river paddle: Your group spends 90 minutes kayaking the Main Branch of the Chicago River as the downtown skyline comes alive at night.

  • Architecture and history stops: Your guide pauses at key riverfront landmarks to share the stories behind Chicago's most recognized buildings and bridges.

  • Nighttime fireworks viewing: You'll reach the fireworks viewing area just in time for the Navy Pier show, watching from your kayak on open water.

  • Safety and paddling orientation: Every tour begins with a 20-minute on-water briefing so first-timers and experienced paddlers start on equal footing.

  • Lit kayaks for night paddling: Each kayak comes equipped with mounted lights, keeping your group visible and your paddle safe after dark.

This is a genuine Chicago experience that puts you in the middle of the city rather than watching it from the shore. The tour runs twice weekly, timed around the Navy Pier fireworks schedule.

Why we love it for your group:

  1. Crowd-free fireworks: You watch the show from the water, away from the packed Navy Pier crowds on land.

  2. Active and social: Paddling together keeps the energy up and gives your group something to talk about long after the night ends.

  3. No experience needed: The orientation covers everything, so anyone in your group can show up and get on the water confidently.

  4. Great for groups: The guided format keeps everyone together and moving at the same pace, which makes it easy to coordinate for larger parties.

  5. Genuinely local: Urban Kayaks has been running Chicago River tours for years and knows the river, the route, and the city well.

About this experience partner:

Additional information:

- Arrival: Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your tour starts to check in and store any gear you do not want on the water in the on-site lockers.

- Late arrivals: If your group is still on land when you arrive, guides will do their best to catch you up. Once the group has launched, late arrivals cannot be accommodated and will need to reschedule.

- Launch site: The tour starts and ends at the Urban Kayaks Riverwalk location, a short paddle from the fireworks viewing area.

- What to wear: Expect to get a little wet. Dress in clothes you do not mind getting damp, and bring workout or cycling gloves — your hands will thank you by the end of the tour.
