About this Experience

What you'll do:

You'll spend two hours on the water at the best possible time of day, paddling through the heart of Chicago as the skyline shifts from daylight to dusk.

  • On-land orientation: Before launch, your guide walks you through safety protocols, river etiquette, and basic paddling technique so every skill level feels ready.

  • Guided river paddle: You'll spend 90 minutes on the Main Branch of the Chicago River, moving through the city with a knowledgeable lead guide.

  • Skyline views: The route passes directly beneath and beside some of Chicago's most recognizable architecture, best seen from water level.

  • History and stories: Your guide pauses throughout the paddle to share the history behind the city's river, its early development, and the landmarks you're floating past.

  • Sunset timing: The tour is timed so the final stretch of your paddle lines up with the city's golden hour, when the light hits the buildings and the water at once.

This is a two-hour outdoor activity that works for first-time kayakers and experienced paddlers alike.

Why we love it for your group:

  1. No experience needed: The pre-paddle orientation covers everything beginners need, so nobody feels behind before you even get in the water.

  2. Built-in wow factor: Floating through the Chicago River with that skyline overhead gives your group something to talk about long after the tour ends.

  3. Great group pace: The guided format keeps everyone together without feeling rushed, so your group actually gets to enjoy the ride.

  4. Chicago from a different angle: Most people visit this city from the street; this tour shows you the same skyline, architecture, and history from the water.

  5. Easy to book for any size: Urban Kayaks handles groups well, making this a practical pick for birthday outings, bachelorette weekends, and casual group trips alike.

About this experience partner:

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear?

Keep in mind that we will be kayaking through downtown Chicago. Do not wear nice/dressy clothing. If you plan on going out after kayaking, bring a change of clothes. The chances of tipping your kayak are extremely low. However, you are likely to get wet. Please dress appropriately. Wear athletic clothing, preferably no jeans or cotton pants. Water-resistant clothing/quick-drying materials are suggested. We have a customer changing room on-site for your convenience. Protect your skin and wear sunscreen. Shoes are required.

Are there storage facilities/bathrooms available?

Yes we have ADA accessible bathrooms. Locker rentals are available on-site for a minimal fee. Free open-air “cubbies” are also available. Bring all belongings at your own risk. We are not responsible for lost or damaged valuables during your outing. We do not provide free dry bags, but we do sell them for $10. Please plan accordingly for any electronics or other valuables you wish to keep dry.

What is the policy for bad weather?

The weather changes quickly in downtown Chicago, and it is often hard to predict what will happen in advance. We will make a call on whether tours are safe to continue at the time of your appointment. In the event of severe weather, such as heavy rain and thunderstorms, we will cancel and offer a refund or option to reschedule. If there is light rain or scattered showers, we often stay open. If we are open and you would like to cancel, you must do so at least 24 hours in advance of your tour or rental time to receive a refund. You always have the option to reschedule. Our Lakefront location may close in the event of high winds on the lake.

What is the policy for alcohol?

We have a no alcohol policy. For your own safety, we do not allow drinking alcoholic beverages before or during kayaking. We invite you to enjoy a beverage AFTER kayaking at our restaurant next door, TacoRio, where kayakers receive 10% off.
