How It Started
Marcy Hesseling had a crazy idea almost thirty years ago. She was in San Francisco, she thought it just might work in New Orleans, and she moved to the Crescent City to find out. The idea was an emporium: glittery makeup, faux eyelashes, and wow-worthy custom wigs. The kind of place that didn't exist anywhere else.
She was right. Fifi Mahoney's — now Fifi's Custom Wigs — opened in 1997 and never looked back. Over the years the shop has wigged Mardi Gras krewes, fashion shows, celebrities, drag performers, burlesque artists, costume groups, and an extraordinary range of regular people who just wanted a little more flair in their lives. Marcy once created a Hawaiian-themed wig with flowing lava. Another was built around the Bates Motel. A Marie Antoinette piece topped with a giant birthday cake was among her personal favorites.
In 2024, Tommy O'Donnell and Neil Ard took over from Marcy with a clear intention: keep the glam and glitter exactly as the shop has always delivered it. The fabric of what Fifi's is hasn't changed. It's just in new hands that love it just as much.
