Papabubble Is the Only Place in America Where You Can Pull 320-Degree Sugar Into Candy With Your Name Running Through It

From a Couch in the Galleria to the Only Papabubble in America

The whole thing started with a pandemic, a couch, and a kid's fascination with candy videos. Founder Jesse Cushman had spent seven years since business school working as an executive at early-stage companies and was job hunting again, this time wanting the next move to be his own. In the middle of that uncertainty, he and his son got hooked on those oddly satisfying clips of someone pulling a rope of hot sugar, folding it over itself, and revealing a picture in the center. He tracked down who was actually doing it and found Papabubble, a Barcelona company with shops across Asia and Europe and basically no presence in the U.S. That gap looked like a mystery worth solving, so he emailed the CEO directly. They started making candy out of a ghost kitchen in the Galleria in November 2022 and opened the storefront in the Heights in August 2023. What Cushman didn't fully anticipate was how much people wanted to be in the room for it. Everything has gone so digital that an hour of pulling sugar with your hands, next to people you actually like, turned out to be exactly what a lot of groups were missing.

Sugar You Actually Work, Not Sugar You Decorate

Most Houston activities that promise you'll "make something" really mean you're finishing something somebody else already built. A cookie that's already baked. A candle kit. A canvas with the lines pre-drawn. Papabubble hands you sugar at 320 degrees and lets you pull it, fold it, and cut it yourself, so what you leave with didn't exist an hour earlier. In the image candy class, the design gets built into the sugar itself before it's ever pulled into rope, which is why nobody quite believes it works until the piece gets sliced open in front of them. Everything happens by hand in the Studewood store, with short ingredient lists and no shortcuts, and there's more actual science behind getting the temperature and pull right than the finished candy lets on.

The Part Where Everyone's Name Ends Up in the Candy

The image candy technique is the thing people can't stop talking about afterward. A name, a logo, or a friend's face gets worked into the center of the rope, and it runs all the way through the candy the way color runs through a stick of rock candy. Guests watch the whole build and still don't believe it's really in there until the piece gets cut. Right behind that in the post-class conversation is how hard the taffy pull actually is. It looks like something anyone could do from across the room, and then it's your turn and your arms find out otherwise. The smell rounds it out. It hits the second you walk in the door and somehow stays with people for days.

Why This Is the Bachelorette Party Booking Nobody Regrets

The simplest explanation for why this works for groups is that nobody can be on their phone. Hands full of hot sugar solve a problem no icebreaker ever has. Bachelorette groups do especially well here, particularly the ones who want a daytime activity that isn't another brunch, or something to get the group warmed up before dinner and drinks. Birthday groups, work teams, and families with kids old enough to follow instructions all show up for the same reason. HR teams have booked offsites through Papabubble and then come back for the holiday party, which says something about how the room actually feels. Everyone stands at the same table doing the same thing at the same time, somebody always makes a mess, and people end up laughing at each other more than at anything scripted. The class runs about an hour, long enough to count as a real activity and short enough that dinner reservations still hold. And because the portable version travels well and needs almost nothing from the host to set up, it works just as easily at a backyard party or a hotel event space as it does in the Heights shop itself, whether that's in Houston or out in Salt Lake City. Everybody leaves holding a bag of candy they made themselves, which is the part that keeps showing up in group chats a week later.

For classes at the Papabubble shop in the Heights or the portable version brought straight to a venue in Houston or Salt Lake City, here's where to book:
